Stop looking for the “right” career, and start looking for a job. Any job. Forget about what you like. Focus on what’s available. Get yourself hired. Show up early. Stay late. Volunteer for the scut work. Become indispensable. You can always quit later, and be no worse off than you are today. But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.

For the same amount of time, energy and effort that you spend on searching for the Right one, you could have gotten back several Suitable one in various aspect of your life.

So let’s start replacing the word “Right”  with “Suitable” in our daily Vocabulary! And start spending more time to look for the Suitable ones  and on them!

  1. this is a very timely article that I think will benefit the millions of graduates in china & india looking for jobs. I will direct this to my contacts to read your article.

I think what’s interesting is each and everyone of us is created differently by God, our creator whoever that you believe in. Some people have a perfectionist mindset and that’s their way of looking at the world. With this operating system, they will go around their lives looking for perfect partner, perfect job and boss. Naturally, the journey is fraught with challenges as they realized it is not operating as they expect it to be. But who is to say they would not find it , given time ?

I am of the opinion that it might not be a bad idea to let others try things their own way rather than telling them what is deemed right for them. Once they have some hard knocks along the journey, perhaps the advice you dish out will seem more palatable and appropriate.

    • Agreed with your view on the given time, and that may not be a definite “YES” that they will get it. Some will have to learn the hard time before they realize it. As this saying go, “When the student is ready, the teacher will be there.”
